Have you been charged with a crime? If so, then you need to contact an attorney sooner rather than later. Sometimes I get a call from a frantic defendant (person charged with a crime) who has to be at court the next day with an attorney. In these cases the prospective client rarely has any money saved for a legal fee and sometimes, even if they have money, they do not have time to meet with me before court the next day.
Most of the time I tell these people that I can not represent them on such short notice. I advise them that they need to appear at court the next day, tell the judge they have talked to an attorney, and ask the judge for a continuance so that they have time to retain me. Sometimes a judge will not grant that extra time, but usually the judge will grant the continuance if the defendant has at least made the effort to contact an attorney.
The bottom line is that once you have been charged with a crime you need to be proactive in your own defense. You need to quickly find a good attorney who can help you navigate what is probably a very strange legal system you have now been thrust into. I have a great success rate with being able to keep clients out of jail or even prison. A defendant usually has options and a good attorney will help you find, understand, and pursue those options.
